Reading Techniques: Skimming and Scanning

By the end of the lesson, students are able to

1. share one's thought confidently and politely based on the topic given in "still thoughts" session.

2. know what skimming and scanning are by pointing out its differences and similarities correctly.

Activities


 

1. The students present their 'still thoughts' in class.

2. The teacher revises the previous topic on scanning generlly.

3. The students gives the answers on the homework given.

4. The students state the differences and similarities between skimming

and scanning orally.

5. The students copy the answers of disscussion as notes.

Reflection

The "Still Thoughts" session was successful as all of the students involved sharing their opinions and thoughts clearly. The revision on skimming showing that 50% of the students were still unsure with it. They might know the theory but did not really understand its application. The exercise on scanning would be the homework due to time constraint. More discussion on skimming and scanning will be carried out in the next lesson.

2. have a general picture on the test format of Paper 3 by having a quick look at the model test paper.

3. know generally the eight general reading strategies by applying the strategies and techniques learnt.

Activities


 

1. The students present their 'still thoughts' in class.

2. The teacher revises the previous topic on reading techniques

generally.

3. The teacher shows a model test paper for Reading as a reference for

the class in the lesson.

4. The students copy the notes on Eight General Reading Strategies.

5. Exercise and discussion.

Reflection

"Still Thoughts" session was satisfactory and the students tended to read and was not loud enough to be heard clearly. The students were able to give correct answers with their own techniques. Half of the students were still unable to differentiate the techniques of skimming and scanning even though they were actually applying it.

2. The teacher revises the previous topic on Eight General Reading

Strategies generally.

3. The teacher gives the notes on Skills for Critical Reading.

4. The teacher explains the skill on comprehension.

5. The students do the exercise given.

6. Discussion.

7. Homework: Topic sentence and supporting details.

Reflection

The "Still Thoughts" session was satisfactory. They were able to identify most of the subject matters correctly. More exercise will be given later.

Reflection

The "Still Thoughts" session was satisfactory. The students were able to follow the lesson by finding out the answers correctly and giving appropriate response based on the questions discussed.

3. The teacher gives notes on stated and implied main idea.

4. The students do on the same set of questions to find its main idea.

5. Discussion.

6. Homework: Identify the main ideas in Exercise B.

Reflection

The "Still Thoughts" session was satisfactory. The students were quite confused with subject matter and main idea. Further discussion will be carried out in the next lesson.
